The high-stakes gamble of a stingray hunting vulnerable crabs
In short: Watch as a smooth stingray exploits a critical window of vulnerability to hunt an army of spider crabs. This footage captures the raw, predatory mechanics of marine life in one of the ocean's least explored habitats.
The video highlights a dramatic encounter where a stingray targets a group of spider crabs that have recently moulted. Because these crabs are freshly moulted, they are left defenceless and unable to provide their usual defense against predators.
As part of the Blue Planet II series, this footage contributes to a broader shift in our understanding of marine biology since 2001. It showcases the extraordinary behaviors and hidden lives of creatures across diverse environments, from polar seas to coral atolls.
