The axolotl is a real-life Peter Pan that never grows up and regrows limbs

In short: Native to Mexico City, the axolotl is an aquatic salamander that defies typical development. While most amphibians undergo metamorphosis to live on land, the axolotl retains its larval gills and tailfin for its entire life. Beyond this permanent youth, it possesses the extraordinary ability to regenerate complex body parts.

The axolotl, or Ambystoma mexicanum, exhibits a rare biological trait known as neoteny. Unlike its relatives in the mole salamander family, it remains in its larval state throughout its life, keeping external, feathery gills and a swimming tailfin. While most amphibians transition to land as they mature, the axolotl stays underwater, growing in size but never completing a full metamorphosis. Though rare, some individuals have been known to mature past this stage and emerge onto land.

This creature is famous for its regenerative powers, which allow it to regrow limbs, tails, and even parts of its brain or spinal cord. Scientists study these amphibians to understand how such complex tissue restoration works, hoping to eventually apply these insights to human medicine. This capacity is not magic; it requires a specific nerve-cell process to initiate the regrowth of lost structures. In the wild, this ability is practical, as axolotls may bite off each other's gills or feet during territorial disputes.

Today, the axolotl is critically endangered, with its only remaining wild habitat being the canals of the Xochimilco lake complex in Mexico City. A 2009 survey estimated fewer than 1,200 individuals remain in the wild. Their decline is driven by the expansion of Mexico City, which has led to habitat loss and water contamination, as well as the introduction of invasive carp and tilapia that compete for food and consume axolotl eggs. Named after the Aztec god Xolotl, the animal has been a symbol of the region for over 800 years, bridging the gap between human culture and the natural world.
