The Baltic wilderness: a sanctuary for Europe's most iconic wildlife

The Baltics: Untouched Animal Paradise | Free Documentary Nature · 48:01 · Video: Free Documentary - Nature · Watch at the source

In short: Explore the vast, primeval forests and floodplains of the Baltic region. This documentary showcases how these untouched landscapes support massive populations of bears, wolves, and rare birds.

The Baltic hinterland serves as a critical habitat for diverse species. Estonia's Alutaguse forests host more than 350 brown bears, while Latvia's forests support a population of over 1,000 wolves. The region is also a vital breeding ground for a fifth of the world's spotted eagle stocks.

Unique geographical features drive local biodiversity. In Latvia, vimba bream—fish barely 50 centimetres long—must navigate a 400-metre rock barrier in the River Venta to reach spawning grounds. Meanwhile, Lithuania is distinguished as the land of storks, hosting over 13,000 pairs.
