A single flight from London to New York equals a year of home heating

In short: Your next vacation might have a heavier environmental price tag than you realize. While aviation is a relatively small slice of global emissions, its rapid growth and high-altitude impact make it a critical frontier for climate science. The solution may lie in a radical shift from combustion to electricity.

The environmental cost of flying is often underestimated because of its current scale relative to total global output. However, aviation accounts for more than 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions and approximately 3% of the European Union's total emissions. The problem is compounded by altitude; while carbon dioxide (CO2) affects the climate equally at any height, nitrogen oxides (NOX) released at high altitudes are particularly effective at forming ozone (O3), which can lead to a greater global warming effect than if they were released at lower levels.

To visualize this impact, a single return trip from London to New York produces more than 2,000 pounds of CO2. Heating a typical home across Europe for one full year produces roughly the same volume of output as this figure. As air travel continues to grow as one of the fastest-growing contributors to global emissions, the industry faces pressure to adopt cleaner technologies before stricter environmental regulations make such travel significantly more expensive.

The transition toward sustainable aviation mirrors the rapid electrification seen in the automotive industry. Researchers at NASA’s Glenn Research Center and institutions like Cranfield University are exploring how to scale this for large aircraft. This involves developing high-efficiency electric motors, lightweight materials, and revolutionary superconducting technologies. While hybrid-electric planes like Electric EEL have already flown, the goal is to create a powertrain that makes commercial flight cleaner, quieter, and more affordable by reducing fuel consumption through advanced propulsion systems.
