Your smartphone weighs as much as a grizzly bear before you open it

The Mineral Behind Your Phone Fueling a Hidden War | SLICE EARTH | FULL DOC · 51:43 · Video: SLICE Earth · Watch at the source

In short: The device in your pocket carries a staggering environmental and human debt. Before you even unbox your phone, the vast majority of its ecological impact has already occurred, fueled by a complex web of geopolitical tension, displaced communities, and high-stakes mineral extraction.

The sheer scale of production is often invisible to the user. A standard 200g smartphone requires the extraction of more than 200kg of raw materials—roughly the weight of 100 bricks or one adult grizzly bear. This process involves over 70 raw materials and more than 50 different metals. Because these critical resources are concentrated in only a handful of geographic locations, control over their supply chains creates significant geopolitical tensions and can directly fuel armed conflict. One of the most strategic minerals involved is coltan, which is refined into tantalum for use in aircraft systems and modern electronics. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, coltan is extracted from deep, unstable shafts where families work in hazardous conditions for meager wages.

This extraction is often shaped by a volatile mix of smuggling networks, armed groups, and fragile institutions, creating a 'hidden war' where the global price of the mineral rises while the local human cost remains devastating. Beyond the human rights violations, such as child labor and community displacement in countries like Argentina, Chile, and the Philippines, the environmental toll is profound. Mining devastates landscapes, pollutes ecosystems, and disrupts local water supplies. Nevertheless, research involving 6,000 individuals from six nations highlighted a significant lack of knowledge: over 50% failed to identify any raw component within their mobile, while 70% had never considered researching where their everyday electronics come from.

The complexity of these supply chains is so dense that even experts highlight the difficulty of tracking every component. However, initiatives like the Mine My Phone hub aim to map these connections, linking 10 key metals—including cobalt, lithium, and rare earth elements—to their specific extraction sites to provide consumers with a clearer picture of the materials powering their digital lives.
