The global temperature is rising toward a critical 1.5°C threshold

Al Gore: The new urgency of climate change · 42:18 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: While the pandemic briefly dropped global carbon emissions by 5%, the long-term trend remains alarming. As Earth's temperature has already warmed by about 0.7°C, the window to prevent the worst outcomes of global warming is narrowing, yet a new era of cheap, renewable energy offers a path toward prosperity.

For two decades, the warnings regarding climate change have intensified. In 2006, Al Gore used his documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, to urge global action against fossil fuel reliance. Since then, atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations have risen significantly. Today, global temperatures hover around 1.5°C (2.7°F) above preindustrial levels—the specific limit established by the 2015 Paris climate agreement. However, the United Nations has recently warned that the world is currently set to overshoot this critical goal.

Despite these risks, the economic landscape of energy is shifting. In most regions, solar and wind power are becoming more affordable than current coal and gas facilities as their expenses drop continuously. This transition is not merely an environmental necessity but an economic opportunity. Proponents suggest that moving toward renewables can transform manufacturing, transportation, and agriculture, while creating millions of new jobs. In the UK, for instance, green jobs are currently growing at a rate four times faster than overall national employment.

National strategies are beginning to reflect this urgency. At the COP29 summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, the UK government announced a new target to reduce emissions by 81% by 2035. This plan involves significant investment in homegrown technologies like hydrogen, carbon capture, and storage, as well as nuclear energy. The goal is to transition toward a 'clean energy superpower' status, reducing reliance on volatile international gas markets that have contributed to recent cost-of-living crises.
