Meet the hell ants: ancient predators with scythe-like jaws and horns

The Reign of the Hell Ants · 11:03 · Video: PBS Eons · Watch at the source

In short: Long before modern ants dominated, a group of bizarre predators known as hell ants roamed the earth. Featuring unique head-mounted horns and massive, scythe-like mandibles, these creatures remain a mystery to researchers who are still working to understand why they eventually vanished.

Hell ants possessed the familiar six-legged, segmented body plan of modern ants, yet they were equipped with specialized anatomy that set them apart from any living species. Their most striking features included a prominent horn protruding from the head and oversized, scythe-shaped jaws.

These ancient insects are known to science through specimens preserved in Cretaceous-era amber. Despite their distinct physical traits, the exact reasons for their extinction remain an open question in paleontology, as researchers continue to study their evolutionary history and ecological role.
