The Aletsch Glacier is retreating at a pace that defies nature
In short: Witness the dramatic transformation of the Aletsch Glacier, a landscape that once inspired J.R.R. Tolkien. This documentary explores how rapid melting is reshaping alpine biodiversity and the urgent conservation efforts to save it.
The Aletsch Glacier is currently losing approximately 50 meters in length and 12 meters in height every year. This rate of retreat is too rapid to be attributed to natural fluctuations alone, signaling a profound shift in the alpine environment.
While the resulting meltwater provides a temporary boost to pioneer plants and pastures, it simultaneously destroys critical habitats for rare species. Conservationists are now implementing strategies to protect forests from drought and document how local flora and fauna are adapting to these shifting conditions.
