The stationary sea snail that hunts by casting a sticky, mucus-based fishing net
In short: Most sea snails spend their lives grazing or hunting on the move, but the scaled wormsnail takes a different approach. By cementing its shell permanently to a rock, it transforms the mucus it produces for movement into a sophisticated fishing net, snagging passing plankton and debris from the water.
The scaled wormsnail, a member of the Vermetidae family, is defined by its unique, worm-like shell structure. Unlike its mobile relatives, this creature spends its entire adult life anchored to a single solid surface, such as a rock. Because it cannot roam to find sustenance, it relies on a creative adaptation: it repurposes the same type of mucus typically used by garden snails for locomotion to construct a sticky web.
Biologist Rüdiger Bieler of the Field Museum of Natural History explains that these snails are not particularly selective eaters. They cast their mucus strands into the water, where the waves churn up a mixture of live plankton, seaweed fragments, and various edible debris. The net acts as a passive trap, collecting whatever happens to float by. Once the net has captured enough material, the snail drags the entire structure back into its shell to consume both the mucus and the trapped food.
While this strategy is effective in the wild, it can become a nuisance in home aquariums. Vermetid snails often enter these tanks as hitchhikers, where they may attach to coral. Their mucus nets can smother and starve the coral, leading to damage. To manage these unwanted guests, aquarists often resort to physically removing the snail's shell tower, soaking the affected rock in chemical solutions, or simply disposing of the infested items entirely. It is a stark contrast to the snail's natural, albeit lonely, existence in the tide pool, where it sits patiently waiting for the ocean to deliver its next meal.
