Why broadband and nature-based solutions are the new farming essentials
In short: Modern farming is facing a dual crisis: extreme climate volatility and a lack of basic digital infrastructure. To survive, the industry must shift from short-term survival to long-term resilience, moving beyond the next harvest toward a model that integrates high-tech connectivity with ancient ecological wisdom.
The transition to sustainable agriculture requires a fundamental shift in how farming is valued and supported. In England, for instance, the government has launched a 25-year Farming Roadmap 2050, marking a historic commitment to long-term stability. This plan acknowledges that farmers manage 70% of England’s land and underpin a £153 billion agri-food sector, which is now recognized as Critical National Infrastructure. However, the current economic measurement of 0.6% of Gross Value Added is considered misleading because it only captures primary activities, ignoring the wider food supply chain from manufacturing to retail.
To achieve profitability, the roadmap emphasizes reducing reliance on expensive inputs like fertilizers through smarter nutrient management and new technology. A key strategy involves 'nature-based solutions,' specifically focusing on improved soil health and water management to combat extreme weather. This is being bolstered by significant investment, including an additional £53 million for the Farming Innovation Programme, bringing total innovation funding to £123 million this year. These funds are specifically earmarked for robotics, soil health, and water management.
Infrastructure and collaboration are the other pillars of this modernization. Beth Ford, CEO of Land O'Lakes, argues that establishing broadband as a basic right is essential for rural communities to access modern tools. Simultaneously, the move toward collaborative models like co-operatives is intended to lower costs and spread risks through collective purchasing. By combining digital connectivity, government-backed innovation, and nature-based resilience, the goal is to provide farmers with the clarity needed to invest in the next generation of agriculture.
