Could our buildings evolve from energy consumers into active power stations?
In short: Buildings are currently responsible for a third of global energy emissions. But a new generation of architecture is flipping the script, moving beyond mere efficiency to actually generate more power than they use, transforming static structures into active participants in the energy grid.
The current architectural paradigm is a major driver of climate change. Globally, buildings account for roughly one-third of energy consumption and emissions, while in the UK, the figure is even higher at approximately 40%. Traditionally, these structures are passive users of the grid, drawing power to maintain heating, lighting, and cooling.
However, the 'buildings as power stations' concept is already proving its viability through real-world demonstrations. In the UK, the Active Classroom—the nation's first energy-positive classroom—demonstrated this potential by generating more than 1.5 times the energy it consumed during its first year of operation. This success, recognized as Project of the Year by RICS Wales, provides a blueprint for scaling such technology to larger structures like the Active Office.
The mechanism behind this shift involves integrating solar technologies directly into the building's fabric. Developed by the SPECIFIC innovation centre at Swansea University, these projects utilize a multi-layered approach to energy harvesting and storage. Key components include curved roofs with integrated flexible solar cells and Photovoltaic Thermal systems on south-facing walls that produce both heat and electricity simultaneously.
To manage this surplus, the systems rely on integrated storage: lithium-ion batteries for electricity and 2,000-litre water tanks for solar heat. The ultimate goal is to create an energy-resilient community where buildings like the Active Office and Active Classroom are linked, sharing energy with one another and even with electric vehicles.
