Germany's hidden inland sea: the 2,000 lakes of Mecklenburg
In short: Explore the Mecklenburg Lake District, a vast aquatic landscape in northeast Germany. This documentary captures the region's high biodiversity and the dedicated conservation efforts required to protect its unique wildlife.
The region is anchored by the Müritz, Germany's second-largest lake and the largest entirely within its borders, spanning 117 square kilometres. The surrounding Mecklenburg Lake District is densely packed with approximately 2,000 lakes between Waren and Feldberg.
Because of the Müritz National Park, the area serves as a critical habitat for diverse species. It hosts half of Germany's crane population, as well as the Eurasian otter, the osprey, and the endangered red milan. The footage was captured over two years by nature conservationist Fred Bollmann to document these ecosystems.
