The high-stakes hierarchy of Africa's largest and most vibrant monkeys
In short: In the dense forests of Gabon, mandrills navigate a complex social structure where dominance is everything. This documentary captures the intense physical and social battles that occur when new males challenge the established order of the troop.
Mandrills live in large communal groups of up to 200 individuals, traveling over 10km daily across Gabon's forests to find food. While females comprise the majority of these troops, the social hierarchy is governed by males, specifically the alpha who must lead from the front.
The video explores the volatile dynamics that emerge when two new males enter a group. It documents how these contrasting characters collide in a battle for dominance, illustrating the unique and often brutal way mandrills determine their leadership.
