In short: The 149th Street Grand Concourse station, a vital hub connecting the IRT Jerome Avenue and White Plains Road lines, was officially renamed the 149th Street-Hostos station. This legislative shift, enacted in February 2022, mandates that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority update all signage and materials to reflect this new identity.

The renaming process was initiated by the New York State Senate through Bill 2021-S8294A, introduced by Senator Serrano in February 2022. The legislation requires the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and the New York City Transit Authority to implement the change once sufficient funds are specifically committed for the project. Upon securing these resources, the authorities are legally obligated to update all station signage and issued items within a ten-month window.

This station complex, located in the Bronx, serves as a critical junction for the IRT subway system. Its history is deeply intertwined with the early development of New York City's rapid transit, dating back to the construction of the original IRT subway lines. The connection between the East Side and West Farms branches, which includes this station, officially opened on July 10, 1905. The station was originally constructed using cut-and-cover methods, as the local rock composition made traditional tunneling difficult, resulting in a roof designed as a massive concrete arch.

The station's infrastructure has evolved significantly since its inception. In 1910, as part of a broader effort to address overcrowding, contracts were modified to lengthen platforms to accommodate ten-car express trains. This project involved extending both platforms at the 149th Street station by 130 feet to the east. Today, the station remains a bustling node, served by the 2, 4, and 5 trains, continuing its legacy as a foundational piece of the city's transit network.
