How a film star’s victory in 1977 permanently reshaped the politics of Tamil Nadu
In short: When M. G. Ramachandran won the 1977 Tamil Nadu assembly election, he did more than just secure the Chief Minister’s office. He turned a regional rivalry into a cinematic spectacle, setting a precedent for actor-politicians and cementing a new era of Dravidian party dominance that marginalized national political organizations for decades.
The 1977 election followed a period of intense political volatility. In 1972, M. G. Ramachandran, a celebrated film actor, was expelled from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) after criticizing the leadership of M. Karunanidhi. Following the dismissal of Karunanidhi’s government by the central government in 1976, the political landscape fractured. By the time of the June 10, 1977, election, the contest had evolved into a four-way race between the AIADMK, the DMK, the Indian National Congress, and the Janata Party.
The result was a decisive victory for M. G. Ramachandran’s AIADMK. The election marked a structural shift in the state's political identity, moving away from the traditional Congress versus DMK rivalry toward a competition between two Dravidian parties. National parties, including the Janata Party, struggled to gain a foothold, often trailing behind their regional counterparts. The DMK retained some strength in its strongholds like Madras city and the Thanjavur district, but the overall trend favored the AIADMK, which successfully navigated complex alliances with groups like the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
M. G. Ramachandran’s transition from screen to statehouse was unconventional. Even after his victory, he delayed his swearing-in by two weeks to finish film commitments, prioritizing his producers and distributors over immediate political duties. On June 30, 1977, he was finally sworn in at Rajaji Hall in Chennai. His success proved so influential that it inspired other stars, such as N. T. Rama Rao in Andhra Pradesh, to pursue political office. This model of the actor-politician became a recurring feature in the region, culminating in the election of C. Joseph Vijay in 2026.
