In short: Founded in 1972 by film star M. G. Ramachandran, the AIADMK transformed from a splinter group into a political powerhouse. By blending socialist ideals with populist welfare schemes, the party secured seven legislative assembly majorities, navigating internal leadership crises and intense rivalries to shape the future of southern India.

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) emerged on 17 October 1972 after M. G. Ramachandran was expelled from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Ramachandran, a legendary film star, leveraged his massive fan base to build the party, which eventually became a cornerstone of Tamil Nadu politics. The party adheres to 'Annaism,' a blend of socialism and secularism rooted in the principles of C. N. Annadurai. Its success is defined by a commitment to welfare, including the distribution of consumer goods like bicycles and laptops, and a firm stance on the 'two-language policy' to protect Tamil and English against Hindi dominance.

The party's history is marked by significant internal volatility. Following Ramachandran's death in 1987, a bitter succession battle erupted between his wife, V. N. Janaki, and actress J. Jayalalithaa. This split led to the freezing of the party's 'Two Leaves' electoral symbol and a period of intense infighting. Jayalalithaa eventually consolidated power, becoming a formidable leader who served as chief minister six times. Her tenure saw landmark legislative achievements, including the 1994 Tamil Nadu Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes, and Scheduled Tribes Act, which secured 69% reservation for the state.

Beyond electoral politics, the AIADMK has been central to infrastructure and social reform. The 'Vision 2023' document aimed to elevate Tamil Nadu into a global innovation hub, while the government actively managed water resources through the Kudimaramathu Scheme and protected the Cauvery Delta as a special agriculture zone. Despite challenges, such as the 2017 leadership transition to Edappadi K. Palaniswami, the party remains a primary influence in the region, consistently competing with the DMK to define the state's economic and social trajectory.
