How a dramatic final-day goal decided the 2011–12 Premier League title race
In short: The 2011–12 Premier League season concluded with a finish so improbable it remains the only time the title has been decided by goal difference. Manchester City and Manchester United finished level on 89 points, but a last-minute goal by Sergio Agüero snatched the trophy for City in the final seconds.
The 2011–12 campaign marked the 20th anniversary of the Premier League. For much of the season, Manchester United appeared to be the dominant force, leading the table until October and later building an eight-point cushion with only six matches remaining. However, a late-season collapse by United, combined with a relentless winning streak from Manchester City, brought the two rivals level on 89 points heading into the final day on 13 May 2012.
The final day was a spectacle of shifting fortunes. While Manchester United secured a victory against Sunderland, Manchester City trailed Queens Park Rangers 2–1 as the match entered stoppage time. Edin Džeko equalized in the 92nd minute, and Sergio Agüero scored the decisive goal in the 94th minute. This 3–2 victory secured City’s first league title since 1968. Had the match ended 2–1, the teams would have finished with identical records, necessitating a neutral-ground play-off to determine the champion.
The season was notable for more than just the title race. Swansea City became the first non-English team to compete in the Premier League, finishing 11th. Meanwhile, the race for European qualification saw a significant shift; despite finishing fourth, Tottenham Hotspur missed out on the Champions League because Chelsea, who finished sixth, qualified automatically by winning the 2012 Champions League final. This was the first time such a rule had been implemented, marking a major change in how league standings dictated European participation.
At the bottom of the table, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers, and Bolton Wanderers were relegated. Notably, all three promoted clubs—Queens Park Rangers, Norwich City, and Swansea City—avoided relegation, a feat not achieved since the 2001–02 season. The season was later voted the greatest in the league's history during the Premier League 20 Seasons Awards.
