The 2014 Champions League final was the first to feature two teams from one city.
In short: When Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid met in Lisbon, they made history as the first clubs from the same city to contest a Champions League final. The match was a tactical thriller that pushed Real Madrid to the brink of defeat before a dramatic late equalizer forced extra time.
The 2014 final, held at the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon on 24 May 2014, marked the 59th season of Europe's premier club football tournament. It was a historic encounter between two Spanish rivals, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid. While Real Madrid sought their record-extending 10th title, known as La Décima, Atlético aimed for their first European Cup trophy, 40 years after their only previous final appearance in 1974.
The match remained tense until the 36th minute, when Atlético's Diego Godín scored a looping header to take the lead. Real Madrid struggled to break down their opponent's defense until the 93rd minute, when Sergio Ramos scored a decisive header from a Luka Modrić corner. This goal forced the match into extra time, the first time a Champions League final had been settled during that period without requiring a penalty shootout.
In extra time, Real Madrid's dominance proved overwhelming. Gareth Bale scored in the 110th minute, followed by a goal from Marcelo in the 118th minute. Cristiano Ronaldo capped the 4–1 victory with a penalty, his 17th goal of the tournament. The win secured Carlo Ancelotti his third title as a manager, joining Bob Paisley as the only coaches to achieve that feat. The event was celebrated as one of the greatest finals in the competition's history, reflecting the intense rivalry between the two Madrid clubs.
