In short: In the summer of 2016, Spanish football underwent a strategic identity overhaul. By dropping long-term sponsors to prioritize a singular brand name, La Liga sought to maximize its global reach while hosting one of the most statistically dominant seasons in modern history.

The 2016–17 season marked a pivotal transition for Spain's top flight. For sponsorship reasons, the league shed its previous identity as LaLiga Santander to become simply La Liga. This move was orchestrated by the governing body, the Liga de Fútbol Profesional, specifically to maximize the brand's international presence. On July 20, 2016, Banco Santander was appointed as the new sponsor, but the primary goal remained a unified commercial identity.

The season saw a fierce title race between two of the world's most storied clubs. Real Madrid ultimately secured their 33rd championship—their first since 2011–12—finishing with 93 points after an away victory against Málaga on the final matchday. Barcelona finished just three points behind in second place. Notably, Real Madrid became only the second team in history to score in every single one of the 38 matches played during a La Liga season, a feat first achieved by Barcelona in 2012–13.

The league's structure remained consistent with 20 teams, featuring three newcomers from the Segunda División: Deportivo Alavés, CD Leganés, and CA Osasuna. While Alavés returned after a ten-year absence, Leganés secured their first-ever promotion to the top flight in June 2016. The season was bookended by iconic moments, starting with Juanpi's goal for Málaga on August 19, 2016, and ending with Lionel Messi scoring the final goal of the campaign for Barcelona on May 21, 2017.
