The 2016 World Twenty20 final was decided by four consecutive sixes in one over
In short: The sixth edition of the Men's T20 World Cup saw 16 teams compete across India in 2016. The tournament culminated in a dramatic final at Eden Gardens, where the West Indies chased down a target against England in the final over, securing victory with two balls to spare.
Held from 8 March to 3 April 2016, the tournament marked the first time India hosted the event. Sixteen teams participated, including ten full members of the International Cricket Council and six associate nations—Ireland, Scotland, Netherlands, Afghanistan, Hong Kong, and Oman—who qualified through a 2015 tournament. The competition was structured into three distinct phases: an initial group stage for the eight lowest-ranked teams, a Super 10 stage, and a final knockout phase.
The final match between England and the West Indies became a historic contest. England posted 155/9, with Joe Root contributing 54 runs. In response, the West Indies required 19 runs from the final over to win. Carlos Brathwaite famously struck four consecutive sixes off Ben Stokes to seal the victory. Marlon Samuels, who scored 85 not out, was named Man of the Match, marking the second time he had received the honor in a final. The match drew a near-capacity crowd of 66,000 spectators.
The tournament faced logistical and security challenges throughout its duration. The high-profile match between India and Pakistan was relocated from Dharamshala to Kolkata’s Eden Gardens following security concerns raised by the Pakistan Cricket Board. Similarly, the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium in Delhi required last-minute municipal clearance to host a semi-final. Despite these hurdles, the event proceeded with a total prize pool of $10 million, a 33% increase over the 2014 edition. Virat Kohli was recognized as the player of the tournament, while Tamim Iqbal and Mohammad Nabi led the statistics for runs and wickets, respectively.
