In short: When Vietnam abandoned its plans to host the 2018 Asian Games due to economic instability, Indonesia stepped in to rescue the event. By leveraging existing infrastructure and accelerating urban transit projects, the nation transformed the continental competition into a massive logistical feat that spanned two major cities and several provinces.

The 2018 Asian Games, officially the XVIII Asian Games, were originally awarded to Hanoi, Vietnam, in 2012. However, by 2014, the project faced significant scrutiny regarding its US$150 million budget, which critics feared could balloon to over US$300 million. Facing economic recession and concerns over the utility of new facilities, Vietnam withdrew its bid in April 2014. Indonesia, which had previously expressed interest, was quickly appointed as the new host, with Jakarta serving as the primary hub and Palembang acting as the supporting host.

Hosting the Games required a massive financial commitment. While the central government initially allocated IDR 3 trillion in 2015, the final state expenditure reached IDR 8.2 trillion. The total economic impact, including extensive infrastructure development, was estimated at US$3.2 billion. To manage these costs, organizers prioritized the renovation of existing venues, such as the 56-year-old Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta and facilities previously used for the 2011 Southeast Asian Games. New construction was limited to essential additions, such as a 40-lane bowling alley and expanded rowing facilities at Jakabaring Sport City.

The event was notable for its cultural and diplomatic milestones. The Games featured 462 events across 40 sports, including the debut of esports and canoe polo as demonstration disciplines. In a historic display of unity, North and South Korea marched together under a single flag during the ceremonies and competed as a joint team in select events. This collaboration resulted in the unified squad securing their inaugural gold medal in a major multi-sport competition, marking a rare moment of cooperation between the two nations.

Beyond the competition, the Games served as a catalyst for urban modernization. Jakarta accelerated the development of its MRT and LRT systems, while Palembang constructed a 25-kilometer light rail line connecting its airport to the sports complex. Despite initial controversies over the design of the Games' mascots, which were later replaced by three animals representing Indonesian regions, the event successfully integrated traditional cultural motifs into its branding, medals, and torch relay, which covered 18,000 kilometers across the archipelago.
