The first time a Spanish league match was banned from Miami
In short: In 2018, La Liga attempted to break into the American market by scheduling an official league match in Miami. However, a clash between commercial ambition and sporting tradition led to a high-profile intervention by FIFA, ultimately keeping the game on Spanish soil.
The 2018–19 season marked a pivotal moment for La Liga's global expansion. On August 16, 2018, the league signed a 15-year agreement with Relevant Sports to host one official match per season in the United States. This was intended to be the first time an official league fixture would take place outside of Spain. This was the league's 88th season since its founding. The campaign officially kicked off on August 17, 2018.
The specific game selected for this debut was Barcelona vs. Girona, scheduled for January 27, 2019. While the club initially pushed for Miami as the venue, they faced immediate bureaucratic hurdles. On September 21, 2018, the Royal Spanish Football Federation denied the request to play in Florida. The federation first blocked the Miami venue in September 2018. This occurred just months after fixtures were announced in July of that year.
The situation escalated to the highest levels of football governance. Following a request for guidance from US Soccer and CONCACAF, the FIFA Council met on October 26, 2018, to discuss the proposal. The governing body rejected the proposal, invoking a 'sporting principle' which dictates that member associations must host official league games inside their own borders. FIFA's decision followed a meeting on October 26, 2018. The council emphasized that official matches must stay within member association territories.
This ruling effectively halted La Liga's immediate plans for a US residency. By December 13, 2018, Barcelona officially withdrew their request to play in Miami. The decision highlighted a significant tension between the commercial desire to globalize football and the traditionalist view that league integrity is tied to its geographic roots. The league eventually abandoned the Miami plan in December 2018. This move occurred while Barcelona was busy defending their title from the previous year.
