The political party switch that redefined a New Jersey seat
In short: In 2019, Jeff Van Drew made a high-profile move from the Democratic to the Republican Party. While his affiliation changed in an Oval Office meeting, his seat remained constant—a rare instance of partisan shifting without a change in the underlying balance of power.
During the New Jersey House of Representatives contests of 2020, all 12 congressional spots stayed within their former party's grasp. This stability was notable even as individual candidates underwent significant personal political shifts. A primary example is Jeff Van Drew, who served as the representative for the 2nd district.
Van Drew originally won the 2nd district in 2018 as a Democrat, flipping the seat with 52.9% of the vote. Yet, his formal transition into the Republican Party was declared during a 19 December 2019 assembly with Mike Pence, Kevin McCarthy, and Donald Trump. Despite this dramatic shift in identity, no seats changed parties during the November 3, 2020, general election.
The state's electoral landscape is defined by distinct regional geographies. The 1st district covers South Jersey and Philadelphia suburbs, while the 2nd district anchors the southern coast across Atlantic, Cumberland, and Salem counties. Other districts include central New Jersey (3rd), parts of Mercer and Monmouth (4th), and northern New Jersey (5th). These elections were part of a massive logistical undertaking that included the 2020 U.S. presidential election and various state and local contests.
The process began with primary elections on July 7, 2020, which were moved from their original June date by Executive Order 120. While the primary dates on candidate lists still reflected the original June 2 date, the actual voting occurred in July to finalize nominees for the general election.
