In short: New Jersey's 11th district is a study in demographic and political evolution. Once a Republican stronghold, this affluent suburban corridor has undergone a dramatic transformation in representation and partisan lean, moving from a reliably GOP seat to a Democratic stronghold in just a few decades.

Established in 1913 based on the 1910 census, the 11th district was originally centered in Essex County. It maintained a Democratic identity for nearly 36 years under representatives Hugh Joseph Addonizio and Joseph Minish. However, the 1980 redistricting fundamentally altered the district's character by shifting its focus toward the Republican-dominated Morris County. By 1984, this shift enabled Republican Dean Gallo to unseat 22-year veteran Minish, transforming the area into a primary Republican stronghold within the Northeast.

The district's economic profile is elite; it is currently the wealthiest congressional district in New Jersey and ranks as the eleventh wealthiest in the United States. A 2024 study revealed that 32.9 percent of households in the district earn over $200,000. Despite this high-wealth status, the political landscape began to shift in 2018. After 12-term Republican Rodney Frelinghuysen announced his retirement, the district was considered a 'toss-up.' Democrat Mikie Sherrill won the seat by an unexpectedly large margin of 56.8% to 42.1%, a shift of 33% toward the Democratic party.

Recent redistricting following the 2020 census further solidified this change. Since 2023, the district lost all of Sussex County and gained several Essex County municipalities, including Millburn and Belleville. While it still contains most of Morris County, the current configuration is significantly more Democratic and less competitive than in previous decades. Democrat Analilia Mejia took office on April 20, 2026, following a special election in which she defeated Republican Joe Hathaway.
