How Arizona's 2022 House elections shifted the state's political landscape after redistricting
In short: In the 2022 midterm elections, Arizona's congressional map underwent significant changes, leading to a notable shift in party control. While Republicans lost statewide races for governor and Senate, they successfully flipped two House seats, marking the first time since 2004 that the party held six of the state's nine congressional districts.
The 2022 elections, held on November 8, were defined by a new congressional map that altered the composition of several districts. Redistricting played a pivotal role in these outcomes, particularly in the 1st district. Incumbent Democrat Tom O'Halleran, who had secured 51.6% of the vote in 2020, faced a significantly more Republican-leaning seat following the boundary changes. He ultimately lost his re-election bid to Republican businessman and former U.S. Navy SEAL Eli Crane.
The Republican party's gains were not limited to the 1st district. By flipping both the 2nd and 6th congressional districts, the party solidified its influence in the state's delegation. In the 6th district, incumbent Republican David Schweikert faced a challenging race against Democrat Jevin Hodge. Despite Schweikert having won his previous term with 52.2% of the vote, the newly redrawn 6th district—which incorporated central Phoenix and downtown areas—proved to be the most competitive House race in Arizona that year.
Other incumbents navigated the shifting landscape with varying degrees of success. Democrat Ruben Gallego, who held the 7th district with 76.7% of the vote in 2020, successfully retained his seat in the new 3rd district, which closely mirrored his previous constituency. Meanwhile, Democrat Greg Stanton, the incumbent for the 9th district, successfully defended his seat in the newly formed 4th district. Unlike his previous urban-centered district, the new 4th district was more rural and highly competitive, highlighting the broader impact of the state's redistricting process on the 2022 electoral outcomes.
