Missouri's 2022 Congressional Map Was the Final One Finalized in the Redistricting Cycle
In short: The 2022 U.S. House elections in Missouri were defined by a protracted, contentious redistricting process. As the final state to finalize its congressional map, Missouri faced months of legislative gridlock between the House, the Senate, and a hard-line Conservative Caucus, ultimately settling on a six-Republican, two-Democratic district configuration.
The 2020 redistricting cycle in Missouri became a legislative marathon, concluding only after significant internal conflict. The Missouri House of Representatives initially passed a map on January 19, 2022, featuring six Republican-leaning and two Democratic-leaning districts. However, this proposal faced immediate resistance from the Conservative Caucus within the Missouri Senate, who advocated for a map containing seven Republican-leaning districts, while Senate Democrats pushed for three Democratic-leaning seats.
This disagreement triggered a series of legislative maneuvers, including filibusters by the Conservative Caucus to block the House's preferred map. By March 24, 2022, a compromise appeared within reach when senators passed a version with six Republican-leaning districts, but the House rejected this iteration. A final resolution was not achieved until May 12, 2022, when the Senate passed a new map that the House had previously approved. Governor Mike Parson signed the map into law on May 18, 2022, making Missouri the last state in the nation to complete its redistricting process.
The resulting map governed the November 8, 2022, elections for Missouri's eight U.S. representatives. These districts encompass diverse regions, from the urban centers of St. Louis and Kansas City to the rural landscapes of the 4th and 6th districts. The redistricting cycle also coincided with a shift in representation for several seats, as incumbents like Vicky Hartzler of the 4th district and Billy Long of the 7th district opted to pursue U.S. Senate bids rather than seeking re-election to the House.
