How Bayer Leverkusen defied probability to complete a historic, nearly perfect football season
In short: In their 120th year, Bayer 04 Leverkusen achieved the impossible. They secured their first Bundesliga title in club history while becoming the first team to finish an entire league campaign undefeated. Their relentless pursuit of victory saw them set a new European record for consecutive matches without a single loss.
The 2023–24 season marked a transformative period for Bayer 04 Leverkusen, culminating in their first major trophy since 1993. On 14 April 2024, a decisive 5–0 victory over Werder Bremen confirmed their Bundesliga title. This triumph was statistically unprecedented, as the team navigated the entire league competition without a single defeat, recording 28 wins and 6 draws. The club's dominance was not merely about avoiding loss but about a remarkable ability to perform under pressure, frequently securing results in the final moments of play.
A defining feature of this campaign was the team's late-game resilience. Throughout their record-breaking run, Leverkusen netted 34 goals from the 80th minute onwards, including 17 goals scored during stoppage time. These late interventions were often the difference between a draw and a win, or a loss and a draw, proving vital to their unbeaten streak. On 9 May 2024, after a 2–2 draw against Roma, the club officially surpassed Benfica’s long-standing European record of 48 unbeaten competitive matches, setting a new benchmark at 49 games.
Despite their domestic perfection, the season concluded with a singular blemish. Their historic unbeaten run across all competitions reached 51 matches before ending with a 3–0 defeat to Atalanta in the UEFA Europa League final on 22 May 2024. However, the team rebounded quickly to secure the DFB-Pokal final against Kaiserslautern on 25 May. This victory cemented an undefeated domestic double, meaning the club finished their entire campaign with only one defeat across 53 competitive matches. This season stands as a testament to sustained excellence and the psychological fortitude required to maintain momentum across a grueling, year-long schedule.
