How Bayer Leverkusen shattered a decade of German football dominance
In short: For eleven straight years, Bayern Munich sat unchallenged at the summit of German football. But the 2023–24 season witnessed a historic shift as Bayer Leverkusen achieved the unthinkable, securing the title with five matches remaining and completing a legendary, undefeated campaign.
The 2023–24 Bundesliga season, marking the 61st edition of Germany's top-flight competition, will be remembered as a period of profound disruption. The campaign commenced on 18 August 2023, featuring a high-profile opening match where Werder Bremen faced the reigning champions, Bayern Munich. While the season began with the familiar hierarchy of German football, the conclusion on 18 May 2024 told a different story.
Bayer Leverkusen's ascent was nothing short of unprecedented. By defeating Werder Bremen 5–0 on 14 April 2024, Leverkusen secured their first-ever Bundesliga championship. This victory did more than just end Bayern Munich's eleven-year streak of consecutive titles; it established Leverkusen as the thirteenth unique champion in the league's history. Most impressively, the club became the first team in the division's history to navigate an entire season without a single defeat, finishing with a precise record of 28 wins and six draws.
The season also featured significant shifts in the league's landscape. While 18 teams competed, the roster saw the return of SV Darmstadt 98 after a six-year hiatus and the debut of 1. FC Heidenheim, which became the 57th club to participate in the Bundesliga. Amidst this movement, Borussia Dortmund maintained its status as a fan favourite, recording the highest average home attendance across the league. The tension of the season extended into the relegation play-offs in late May 2024, where VfL Bochum narrowly avoided relegation by defeating their opponents 6–5 on penalties following a 3–3 aggregate draw.
