A historic leadership victory preceded a total electoral wipeout
In short: In early 2026, Christine Fréchette secured the leadership of Quebec's Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) with over 57% of the vote. But this internal triumph was short-lived: just months later, her party suffered a historic defeat, losing every single one of its 79 seats in a provincial general election.
The leadership transition began in January 2026 when François Legault announced his resignation following a period of significant political decline. While Legault had secured consecutive majority victories in 2018 and 2022, the government's approval ratings plummeted by late 2023. By the time he stepped down, the CAQ was struggling in polls, occasionally tied for last place behind Québec solidaire.
The race between Christine Fréchette and Bernard Drainville highlighted a strategic divide within the party. Fréchette centered her campaign on economic issues and supported the cancelled Programme de l'expérience québécoise, while Drainville focused on identity and immigration. The financial disparity was notable; Fréchette raised nearly $120,000 compared to Drainville’s nearly $55,000. To qualify, candidates faced strict requirements, including a $30,000 non-refundable deposit and the collection of 1,000 signatures from members across at least 75 districts.
Despite Fréchette's successful navigation of the ranked-choice voting system—where she defeated Drainville to become Quebec's second female premier—the party could not sustain its momentum. The transition occurred during a period of high instability, with several high-profile ministers resigning and by-elections being lost to the Parti Québécois. This internal shift ultimately failed to stem the tide, resulting in an electoral wipeout where the CAQ lost all 79 seats in the subsequent general election.
The election rules were also a point of contention; Drainville had called for restrictions to limit voting to Canadian citizens, but the final rules allowed any resident of Quebec aged 16 or older who met residency requirements to participate. The final turnout reached 77.1% of the 20,524 eligible voters.
