Africa's expanded path to the 2026 World Cup
In short: For the first time, the African continent secured a massive increase in World Cup berths. This shift fundamentally altered the competitive landscape, moving from a high-pressure five-team limit to a more expansive nine-slot opportunity, reshaping how nations navigate the road to the global stage.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) marked a significant expansion in opportunity. Because nine slots were reserved for African teams instead of the previous five, the CAF Executive Committee overhauled the qualification format on May 19, 2023. This change meant that the stakes were distributed across a wider net of participating nations, aiming to provide more pathways for continental talent to reach the final tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The structure was organized into nine groups of six teams, where each group operated on a home-and-away round-robin basis from November 2023 to October 2025. The primary goal was straightforward: the winner of each of the nine groups earned direct qualification. However, the nuance lay in the secondary tier. The four best runners-up from across all groups were seeded into a play-off system to determine a single representative for the inter-confederation play-offs.
The competition saw participation from 54 FIFA-affiliated associations, though Eritrea withdrew following the draw held on July 13, 2023, in Abidjan. Following Eritrea's exit, Group E was reduced to five sides; consequently, CAF informed participants on 14 March 2025 that results involving bottom-placed clubs would be ignored during runner-up placement. Ultimately, DR Congo emerged as the continental representative for the final inter-confederation play-offs, joining nations from CONMEBOL, AFC, CONCACAF, and OFC.
Statistically, the qualification cycle was prolific, featuring 259 matches that produced 648 goals. This resulted in an average of 2.5 goals per match, reflecting a high-scoring and competitive environment across the African continent.
