The 2026 Bangkok floods: a city submerged by 48 hours of relentless rain
In short: In late September 2026, a tropical system transformed Bangkok into a disaster zone. With 37 main roads blocked and 50 districts declared under emergency, the flooding became the city's worst in 15 years, paralyzing transport, shuttering schools, and forcing massive industrial shutdowns.
The crisis began following 48 hours of continuous heavy rainfall, with some parts of Bangkok recording over 300 mm of rain. The meteorological origins of the disaster were complex: a tropical depression initially formed near Krong Siem Reap, Cambodia, on 24 September. While the system moved through southern Thailand and Myanmar, it evolved from a well-marked low-pressure area into a deep depression by 28 September, according to the IMD.
The impact on the city's infrastructure was profound. Thai Airways cancelled many flights on 28 and 29 September due to insufficient ground crew at Suvarnabhumi Airport, resulting in 5,600 pieces of luggage being delayed. The crisis even reached the industrial sector, as Toyota was forced to shut down four plants because flooding prevented the delivery of essential parts. Beyond the capital, the floods affected over 500,000 people across 25 provinces, with Samut Prakan identified as the most severely hit region.
The human cost was significant, with the death toll rising to 40 people. Fatalities included a 58-year-old woman electrocuted in a Khlong Chan car park, and two men in Bueng Kum—aged 73 and 78—who drowned. The economic toll was estimated at at least $320 million in damages. In the aftermath of the peak flooding, the Thai Cabinet even approved special holidays for residents in Bangkok and surrounding provinces to focus on family recovery.
