Rory McIlroy joins an elite club of consecutive Masters champions
In short: Winning the Masters is a feat of endurance, but defending it is a rarity that defines golfing immortality. In 2026, Rory McIlroy achieved this rare double, joining only three other legends to hold the title for two years in a row.
The 90th edition of the Masters Tournament took place from April 9–12 at Augusta National Golf Club. The competition saw Rory McIlroy secure his second consecutive victory, finishing just one stroke ahead of runner-up Scottie Scheffler. McIlroy entered a rare group alongside Nick Faldo, Tiger Woods, and Jack Nicklaus as historical figures who secured consecutive victories.
The tournament's exclusivity is maintained through a strict invitation system. While it features the smallest field of any major championship, the selection process is rigorous. Invitations are granted based on past wins, recent major success, high rankings in the Official World Golf Ranking, and specific performances in various international opens. Notably, Augusta National updated its criteria in August 2025 to include winners of several national opens while removing those from the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup Fall.
The 2026 field was notable for its diversity and debutants. With twenty-two first-time Masters participants—among them Chris Gotterup, Ben Griffin, Jacob Bridgeman, and Kristoffer Reitan—the event saw its record eight Nordic competitors. Conversely, it marked a rare absence of both Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods, a dual vacancy that had not occurred since 1994.
Beyond the leaderboard, the tournament saw physical changes to the course and traditions. Nandina, the 17th hole, expanded to 450 yards (410 m) following a 10 yard (9 m) extension. Meanwhile, the Masters Club Dinner continued its tradition dating back to 1952, where the defending champion chose the menu for former winners. This year's feast featured high-end offerings like wagyu filet mignon and a wine selection including a 1989 Château d'Yquem.
