A special election in New Jersey reshapes the political landscape of the 11th district.
In short: Following the resignation of Mikie Sherrill to become governor, New Jersey held a special election to fill her vacant congressional seat. The race saw a significant victory for Analilia Mejia, marking the strongest Democratic performance in the district since 1982 and highlighting shifting dynamics within the party's primary process.
The vacancy in New Jersey's 11th congressional district occurred on November 20, 2025, when Mikie Sherrill stepped down to assume the role of governor. Governor Phil Murphy subsequently set the special election date for April 16, 2026. To facilitate participation, officials organized early voting between April 6 and April 14, while also providing voters with the option to submit ballots by mail.
The primary stage, held on February 5, 2026, became a focal point for internal party tensions. Analilia Mejia, the co-executive director of the Center for Popular Democracy, secured the Democratic nomination. Her path was complicated by the involvement of outside groups, specifically AIPAC, which targeted former U.S. Representative Tom Malinowski. Although Malinowski positioned himself as a Democrat supportive of Israel, the organization launched negative campaigns against him due to his stance on foreign military aid. These advertisements may have inadvertently aided Mejia, who has publicly accused Israel of genocide in Gaza.
Mejia’s platform includes calls for the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and a firm stance against what she characterizes as growing authoritarianism. Her eventual victory in the special election was confirmed on February 12, 2026, when major news outlets projected her win over Malinowski and former Lieutenant Governor Tahesha Way. The Republican nomination was won uncontested by Joe Hathaway, a councilman and former mayor of Randolph. Mejia’s success represents a notable shift for the district, which had not seen such a strong Democratic showing since 1982, the last time a Democrat held the seat prior to 2018.
