In short: Formed in early 2025, the 3rd Army Corps represents a significant shift in Ukrainian military organization. By consolidating multiple brigades under a unified command, the unit has taken responsibility for a critical stretch of the front line, successfully slowing Russian advances and integrating modern equipment into its defensive operations.

The 3rd Army Corps was established in 2025 as part of a broader restructuring of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, moving beyond the traditional brigade-level command. Led by Andriy Biletsky, the corps was officially announced on 14 March 2025. By May, the unit’s structure was defined to include five distinct brigades—comprising mechanized, assault, and heavy mechanized units—alongside specialized support elements like intelligence, medical, and drone regiments. This organizational shift was designed to streamline bureaucratic processes and improve operational efficiency on the battlefield.

By June 2025, the corps assumed command over a 120-kilometre line of the front, a sector that had previously experienced significant Russian territorial gains. According to reports from military journalists and corps commanders, this consolidation allowed for a more cohesive defense. Between June and July, the unit successfully repelled offensives and prevented Russian forces from reaching the Oskil River. By August and September, the corps was engaged in large-scale defensive operations against Russian forces, including the 20th and 25th Combined Arms Armies and the 1st Guards Tank Army, despite facing a numerical disadvantage.

The corps’s operational capacity has been bolstered by international support and specialized technology. In July 2025, the unit received 42 Patria armored personnel carriers from Latvia, which commanders described as the most modern equipment they had utilized. Furthermore, the corps employs a diverse array of unmanned systems, including reconnaissance drones like the Shark and FlyEye, alongside multirotor models. Holding approximately 12% of the active front line between Lyman and Borova, the corps remains a central component of Ukraine’s defensive strategy in the northern Donbass region, driven by a distinct nationalist ideology.
