How a volunteer drone group evolved into a specialized Ukrainian military brigade
In short: Starting as a small volunteer aerial reconnaissance team in 2022, the unit known as Magyar's Birds rapidly expanded through the ranks of the Ukrainian military. Today, it operates as a full-scale brigade, integrating advanced engineering, electronic warfare, and deep-strike capabilities to reshape modern battlefield tactics through unmanned technology.
The 414th Separate Unmanned Systems Brigade traces its origins to the early stages of the 2022 invasion, when Robert Brovdi, a volunteer fighter known as Magyar, organized a group for aerial surveillance. Initially operating alongside existing infantry units, the team quickly pivoted to strike missions, utilizing early FPV drones and custom-made munitions. This experimental approach proved highly effective, leading to the unit's formal integration into the Armed Forces of Ukraine and its subsequent expansion from a company to a battalion, then a regiment, and finally a brigade by December 2024.
Central to the brigade's success is its production-engineering directorate, Tsukrarnia, or Sugar Factory. This facility allows the unit to develop, modernize, and manufacture its own specialized munitions and components. By April 2025, the brigade maintained four internal engineering sub-units, producing over 50 distinct types of munitions. These tools are distributed across the defense forces, supporting drone operators in more than 120 different units. This self-sufficiency enables the brigade to maintain a high operational tempo, whether conducting tactical reconnaissance or executing deep strikes against infrastructure.
The brigade's operational scope has grown significantly, moving from front-line support to strategic missions. The 9th Kairos Battalion, for instance, coordinates deep-strike operations against targets up to 1,500 kilometers away, including oil refineries and radar installations. In June 2025, the unit completed its transition into the newly formed Unmanned Systems Forces. Under the leadership of commander Andrii Klymenko, the brigade continues to refine its layered control of the battlefield, combining electronic warfare, signal intelligence, and drone strikes to maintain a persistent presence across the theater of operations.
