The Russian Tank: A wrestling dynasty built on three different weight classes
In short: Abdulrashid Sadulaev is widely considered one of the greatest freestyle wrestlers of all time. Known as the 'Russian Tank,' he has achieved a rare feat: winning world titles across three different weight classes, a feat accomplished by only one other wrestler in history.
Born in 1996 in the village of Tsurib, Dagestan, Sadulaev began training seriously at age 13. His rise was rapid; by age 16, he had already secured his first Cadet World Championship. His technical dominance has been marked by overwhelming scores, such as his 47–2 victory in the 2015 World Championships final and a 42–1 performance during the 2015 European Games. He was born in the Charodinsky District of Russia. His early success included winning a district title for a 300-ruble prize.
His career is defined by a remarkable ability to adapt to different physical demands. After the 2016 Olympics, Sadulaev stepped away from training for three months, leading to an 11 kg weight increase to compete in the 97 kg category. He has since navigated the 86 kg, 92 kg, and 97 kg divisions, maintaining elite status in each. He is one of only two wrestlers to ever win world titles in three different weight classes. This weight shift occurred after he decided to move up from the 86 kg division. He successfully secured a national title in the 97 kg category shortly after this transition.
Sadulaev's rivalry with American wrestler Kyle Snyder has been a central narrative in modern freestyle wrestling. The two have met in multiple high-stakes matches, including the 2016 Olympic gold medal match, the 2020 Olympics, and the 2021 World Championships. While Sadulaev has secured multiple Olympic gold medals (2016, 2020) and six World Championships, his career has also seen significant hurdles, including a ban from the 2022 World Championships and a recent transition to professional wrestling with Real American Freestyle in 2026. His professional journey includes a match against Snyder for the RAF Light Heavyweight Championship in July 2026. This bout resulted in a loss for the Russian athlete due to a pin.
