The tragic collapse of a rising football star and his enduring legacy in Amsterdam
In short: Abdelhak Nouri was a premier youth talent destined for greatness until a sudden cardiac event on the pitch changed his life forever. His story, marked by a devastating injury and a subsequent legal reckoning, has transformed into a powerful symbol of solidarity and remembrance within the global football community.
Born in Amsterdam in 1997, Abdelhak Nouri emerged as one of the world's most promising young footballers. A product of the renowned Ajax academy, he was identified by The Guardian in 2014 as one of the top 40 youth players globally. His technical skill as an attacking midfielder earned him the Player of the Season award for Jong Ajax during the 2016–17 campaign, paving the way for his promotion to the first team.
The trajectory of his career was halted in July 2017 during a pre-season friendly against Werder Bremen. Nouri suffered a cardiac arrhythmia attack on the field, which resulted in severe and permanent brain damage. An investigation later determined that the medical response provided on the pitch was inadequate, as a failure to resuscitate him with sufficient haste contributed to the severity of his condition. This finding led to a legal settlement in 2022, in which Ajax agreed to pay €7.85 million to his family and cover his ongoing medical expenses.
Following the incident, Nouri became a poignant figure in football culture. His former teammates across various clubs adopted his shirt number, 34, as a tribute to his career. In May 2019, the Ajax squad dedicated their 34th league title to him, celebrating with his father. Beyond the pitch, his legacy is physically cemented in his hometown; in June 2022, a square in Amsterdam Nieuw-West was officially renamed the A. Nouri Plein. While Nouri remains significantly affected by his injuries, the swift medical intervention by former teammate Ismail Saibari during a 2026 match serves as a stark reminder of the importance of emergency preparedness in professional sports.
