In short: Stretching into the Caspian Sea like the beak of an eagle, the Absheron Peninsula is a landscape of extremes. From ancient surface wells to the largest oil field on earth at the start of the 20th century, this arid strip has shaped the economy of Azerbaijan.

The Absheron Peninsula, an eastern extension of the Caucasus Mountains, is a gently undulating plain characterized by ravines, salt lakes, and a semi-arid climate. With annual precipitation often falling below 200 mm, the natural landscape consists primarily of dry steppe and semi-desert. The peninsula's name is derived from the Persian term for 'salty waters,' a fitting description for a region where highly mineralized groundwaters are common due to thick layers of clay and sediment.

The peninsula's modern history is inextricably linked to petroleum. While oil has been utilized since antiquity—with surface wells providing lamp oil by the 15th century—commercial exploitation began in earnest in 1872. By the beginning of the 20th century, the Baku oil field had become the largest in the world, a status it maintained in the Soviet Union until the 1940s. This industry triggered massive migrations, such as the influx of Iranian laborers during the late 19th century.

Today, the peninsula is dominated by the Baku Metropolitan Area, which encompasses nearly the entire landmass. While much of the easily extractable oil was exhausted by the late 20th century, forcing drilling to move deeper and further into the seabed, the region remains a vital industrial hub. Beyond energy, the economy supports shipbuilding, metalworking, and chemical production, while the capital, Baku, serves as a major cultural and educational center, home to institutions like Baku State University, founded in 1919.
