The rapid rise and fall of English winger Adam Johnson
In short: From Premier League champion to prisoner, Adam Johnson's football career was defined by both high-stakes trophies and a sudden, scandalous downfall. After winning the Premier League with Manchester City, the winger's life took a dramatic turn following an arrest that led to a prison sentence.
Born in Sunderland in 1987, Adam Johnson was a product of the Middlesbrough youth academy. He made his professional debut at age 17 during a UEFA Cup match against Sporting CP on 17 March 2005. His early career was marked by significant potential, including winning the 2003–04 FA Youth Cup with Middlesbrough and earning 12 senior caps for England. He previously trained at Newcastle United's Centre of Excellence before joining the Middlesbrough academy. His professional debut occurred in a 1–0 loss against the Portuguese side Sporting CP. Additionally, he spent time on loan at both Watford and Leeds United during his early years. He even earned the title of North East Football Writers' Young Player of the Year.
Johnson reached the pinnacle of English football with Manchester City, winning the FA Cup in 2011 and the Premier League during the 2011–12 season. In 2012, he returned to his hometown club, Sunderland, for a transfer fee of £10 million. During his time at Sunderland, he achieved notable milestones, such as being named the Premier League Player of the Month in January 2014.
However, his career ended abruptly following legal proceedings. Following his March 2015 arrest for sexual misconduct involving a 15-year-old, Johnson faced charges despite the UK's legal consent age being 16. A six-year prison term was handed to him in March 2016 after he admitted to child grooming and other offences. Having completed fifty per cent of his term, he gained freedom in 2019.
