How a Leicester underwear manufacturer pioneered the modern replica football kit industry
In short: Before the 1970s, football fans could not buy official team shirts. Admiral, originally a maker of undergarments, transformed the sport by convincing clubs to adopt branded kits. This shift turned team uniforms into a global commercial phenomenon, forever changing how supporters connect with their favorite clubs and players.
Founded in 1914 by Christopher Cook and Harold Hurst, the Admiral brand began as a Leicester-based undergarment business. It was not until after England’s 1966 World Cup victory that owner Bert Patrick pivoted the company toward football apparel. Patrick saw an opportunity in the rise of color television, believing it would make personalized, branded kits attractive to clubs. Despite facing significant public resistance, his vision eventually reshaped the industry.
The breakthrough arrived in the 1973–74 season when Leeds United became the first English top-flight team to wear a visibly branded kit. Building on this momentum, Admiral secured a 1974 agreement with the Football Association to create the first commercially available England shirt featuring a manufacturer's logo. This five-year deal, worth an initial £15,000 annually or a 10 percent royalty, effectively launched the modern replica kit market. By the late 1970s, Admiral had expanded its reach to clubs across Europe, Iran, and India, as well as the North American Soccer League.
Despite its influence, the company faced financial turbulence, declaring bankruptcy in 1982 while still holding the prestigious England contract. The brand survived through various ownership changes, including acquisitions by Hay & Robertson in 1997 and later by a Manchester firm in 2011. Today, Admiral continues to operate as a heritage brand, collaborating on fashion-forward projects and maintaining its historical ties to football and cricket through new partnerships and limited-edition releases.
