The massive dam that turned a saltwater bay into a freshwater lake
In short: In 1932, the Netherlands completed a monumental engineering feat: the Afsluitdijk. This 30-kilometre barrier severed the Zuiderzee from the North Sea, fundamentally transforming the Dutch landscape by creating the freshwater IJsselmeer and reclaiming vast tracts of agricultural land from the sea.
The Afsluitdijk, or 'Enclosing Dam,' was the centerpiece of the ambitious Zuiderzee Works. Before its construction, the Zuiderzee was a saltwater inlet of the North Sea that provided maritime access to five Dutch provinces and served as vital fishing grounds. However, the opening of the North Sea Canal in 1876 and the depletion of fish stocks shifted the economic necessity toward land reclamation to support a rapidly growing population. The project was driven by the need for more fertile soil to support the nation's expanding population. Cornelis Lely, a prominent civil engineer, was instrumental in designing the initial plan for this massive closure.
Construction began in 1927 and was completed in 1932. The dam spans approximately 30 to 32 kilometres, connecting the provinces of Noord-Holland and Friesland. This undertaking transformed the bay's southern region into the freshwater IJsselmeer, or Lake IJssel, by isolating the Zuiderzee from the North Sea and the Waddenzee. The structure serves as a vital road connection between the northern and western parts of the country. It stretches from Den Oever in North Holland to the village of Zurich in Friesland.
This engineering achievement facilitated the creation of several polders—land reclaimed from the sea through complex pumping systems—to be used for agriculture and animal husbandry. While the original structure had varying heights, such as 7.4 metres at the Vlieter channel, it has undergone significant upgrades. Following the deadly North Sea Flood of 1953, maintenance has included raising the dam's height, with recent major works starting in 2019 to further increase its resilience against storm conditions. Modern upgrades aim to limit wave overtopping during severe storms. These enhancements ensure the barrier remains resilient against rising sea levels.
