In short: Headquartered at Langley Air Force Base, the Air Combat Command is the primary provider of US air combat forces. From managing thousands of aircraft to coordinating massive humanitarian relief, this major command serves as the backbone of air defense and rapid global deployment.

Activated on 1 June 1992, the Air Combat Command (ACC) was formed from the merger of the Tactical Air Command, Strategic Air Command, and Military Airlift Command. While it initially held a diverse portfolio including intercontinental ballistic missiles, its mission has evolved significantly. For example, control of the ICBM force was transferred to Air Force Space Command in 1993, and later to Air Force Global Strike Command in 2009. The command also absorbed the Air Rescue Service in 1993, integrating combat search and rescue into its core structure. This reorganization followed the inactivation of the original Tactical Air Command.

The scale of the ACC is immense. The command directly operates 1,110 aircraft, including fighters, attack, reconnaissance, and electronic warfare platforms, as of April 2023. Its personnel strength includes approximately 74,240 active duty airmen and 10,610 civilians. However, the command's true reach is seen during mobilization, when the addition of over 49,000 Air Force Reserve and National Guard personnel and 700 more aircraft can push the total force to over 123,240 airmen and 1,800 aircraft. As of April 6, 2023, the fleet included 48 fighter squadrons and 9 attack squadrons. This massive force includes specialized assets for electronic warfare and airborne command and control.

Beyond combat, the ACC plays a vital role in global stability and humanitarianism. The command has supported operations ranging from enforcing no-fly zones in Bosnia to providing relief in Somalia, Uganda, and Kenya. It also provides the air components for several major geographic commands, including US Central Command and US Northern Command, ensuring that the United States maintains both peacetime air defense and wartime readiness. The command's reach extends to humanitarian efforts in Haiti and the Balkans. It also provides critical support for counter-drug missions using reconnaissance and radar assets.
