From a 1953 merger to a state-owned symbol of Algerian skies
In short: Born from the union of two mid-century carriers, Air Algérie has navigated decades of political shifts and fleet transformations. Today, the 100% state-owned flag carrier manages an expansive network, yet its history is marked by both ambitious global expansions and periods of profound financial restructuring.
The origins of Air Algérie lie in the 1953 merger of Compagnie Générale de Transports Aériens (CGTA) and Compagnie Air Transport (CAT). While CGTA began chartering flights between Algeria and Europe in 1947, the new entity emerged on 23 May 1953 with a fleet including Breguet 761, Bretagne, DC-3, and DC-4 aircraft. In its early years, the airline operated under significant French influence, with shipping companies holding a 98% stake until Algeria gained independence in 1962.
Following independence, the airline's ownership transitioned through several phases. By 1963, the Algerian government held a 51% interest, a figure that rose to 57% in 1964 and eventually reached 100% by 1979. This era saw significant fleet modernization, including the acquisition of Ilyushin Il-18s for Moscow routes and the later introduction of Boeing 737s and 727s. The airline also expanded its reach, adding routes to destinations like Karachi in 1975 and Montreal in 2007.
Despite its role as a national symbol—represented by a swallow logo created in 1966—the airline has faced severe turbulence. The 1990s were particularly difficult; in 1990 alone, the carrier recorded losses of US$64 million, with debts climbing to US$402 million following local currency devaluation. While a restructuring process between 1990 and 1995 led to a profit of US$14.5 million in 1992, the airline continues to navigate the complexities of being a loss-making state enterprise, managing a vast network of 33 domestic and 44 international destinations as of late 2026.
