In short: Air Macau serves as the flag carrier for its namesake territory, yet its aircraft have never featured the official flag of the Macau Special Administrative Region. Established in 1994, the airline filled a long-standing void in local aviation, eventually growing into a regional hub connecting mainland China with international destinations.

Before Air Macau began commercial operations on 9 November 1995, the territory had been without scheduled air service since 1962, relying instead on helicopter flights. The airline’s launch marked a significant shift, with its inaugural flights connecting Macau to Beijing and Shanghai. By December 1995, the carrier expanded its reach to include Taipei. This development was crucial for regional connectivity, as evidenced by the airline's 1999 performance, when 80% of its 1.1 million passengers originated from Kaohsiung and Taipei.

The ownership structure of the airline has evolved significantly over the decades. In 2006, the company was held by a consortium including China National Aviation Holding, TAP Air Portugal, STDM, EVA Air, and the government of Macau. A major shift occurred in 2010 when TAP Air Portugal sold its stake to Air China. The airline's operational history also includes failed ventures, such as the low-cost project Macau Asia Express. Founded in 2006 with $30 million in funding, the project faced financial instability and eventually had its Air Operator's Certificate revoked in 2008.

Today, the airline operates a fleet consisting of Airbus A320, A320neo, A321, and A321neo aircraft, serving 24 destinations, including 15 within mainland China. Despite its status as a flag carrier, the airline maintains a unique visual identity, notably omitting the Macau flag from its livery. This practice mirrors the history of Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific, though Air Macau distinguishes itself by also having never displayed the Portuguese flag prior to the 1999 handover. The airline continues to integrate into broader aviation networks, such as the 2015 merger of its Lotus Miles program into Air China's Phoenix Miles.
