How a regional Chinese airline became a global five-star aviation powerhouse
In short: Born in 1989 as a provincial carrier in China's largest special economic zone, Hainan Airlines transformed into a global aviation leader. Today, it is one of only ten airlines worldwide to hold a five-star rating from Skytrax, operating nearly 500 routes across Asia, Europe, North America, and Oceania.
Established in October 1989, Hainan Airlines began as Hainan Province Airlines. It marked a significant milestone in 1993 by becoming China's first joint-stock air-transport company following a major restructuring. The airline was initially financed by the Hainan government and corporate staff, later expanding its reach through strategic investments and fleet growth. By 1998, it became the first Chinese carrier to own a stake in an airport, purchasing 25% of Haikou Meilan International Airport, which remains its main base today.
The airline's growth trajectory was marked by ambitious fleet acquisitions, including orders for Boeing 787 Dreamliners and Airbus A330s. In 2014, it launched the first direct flight between Boston and China. Despite facing challenges, including the 2008 financial crisis and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on international routes like Chicago-O'Hare, the airline maintained its focus on premium service. It currently offers diverse cabin configurations, such as the 'Dream Feather' design on newer Boeing 787-9s, which features premium economy seating and advanced entertainment systems.
The corporate structure of the airline has seen significant evolution. In 2021, its parent company, HNA Group, entered bankruptcy restructuring, leading to a court-ordered split. By 2022, the airline became a subsidiary of HNA Aviation, part of the Liaoning Fangda Group. Despite these structural shifts, the airline has consistently been recognized for excellence, winning the Skytrax award for Best Airline in China as recently as June 2024. It remains a central player in global aviation, connecting over 90 cities worldwide.
