The Honduran herbalist who built a celebrity empire on pseudoscientific health claims
In short: Alfredo Bowman, known as Dr. Sebi, rose from humble beginnings in Honduras to become a celebrity healer in the United States. While he claimed his alkaline diet could cure everything from AIDS to cancer, his career was defined by legal battles, accusations of quackery, and a mysterious final arrest.
Born in 1933 in Ilanga, Honduras, Alfredo Darrington Bowman lacked formal medical training but gained fame for his African Bio-Electric Cell Food Therapy. After struggling with his own health issues, including asthma and diabetes, he turned to traditional herbal practices. He eventually marketed his products in the United States, establishing the USHA Research Institute near La Ceiba, Honduras. His philosophy rejected germ theory and relied on what experts at McGill University labeled race pseudoscience, claiming unique genetic traits in Africans and the diaspora.
Bowman attracted a high-profile clientele, including Michael Jackson, Eddie Murphy, and Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes. His business was lucrative, with reports suggesting he earned over $3,000 daily. However, his methods drew intense scrutiny. In 1987, the New York State Attorney General charged him with practicing medicine without a license after he advertised cures for AIDS. Although he was acquitted because jurors found no evidence of a formal medical diagnosis, a subsequent civil suit resulted in a consent agreement prohibiting him from making therapeutic claims for his products.
His life ended in controversy. In May 2016, authorities arrested Bowman at a Honduran airport for money laundering after finding him with $37,000 in cash. While held in a Honduran prison, he contracted pneumonia. He died on 6 August 2016 while being transported to a hospital. While some followers allege a conspiracy to silence him, his family attributes his death to his advanced age and the poor conditions within the prison system. Despite his death, his influence persists in pop culture, referenced by artists like Kendrick Lamar and the subject of planned documentaries.
