In short: Founded in 1937 at an army headquarters in Shimla, the All India Football Federation has navigated decades of internal conflict, international suspensions, and shifting professional landscapes. From barefoot legends to modern corporate partnerships, the federation remains the central, albeit often controversial, architect of the sport's development across the Indian subcontinent.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) was officially established on 23 June 1937, following a conference of nine regional associations in Shimla. This formation followed years of failed attempts to unify the country's football governance, which had previously been dominated by the Indian Football Association, a body largely run by British officials. It was not until 1948, one year after India's independence, that the AIFF secured affiliation with FIFA, enabling the national team to debut at the 1948 Summer Olympics.

The federation's history is marked by both ambition and significant setbacks. In 1950, India qualified for the FIFA World Cup but withdrew, with various accounts citing funding issues or a preference for the Olympics. By 1954, the AIFF helped found the Asian Football Confederation. However, the organization has faced recurring governance crises. In August 2022, FIFA suspended the AIFF due to undue third-party interference, stripping India of hosting rights for the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup. The ban was lifted within weeks after the government agreed to cease interference, allowing the tournament to proceed.

Modern challenges persist regarding financial equity and administrative transparency. While the AIFF launched the National Football League in 1996 and later the I-League, it has struggled with marketing and sponsorship stability. Critics, including reports from The Telegraph, have alleged rampant corruption and mismanagement. Furthermore, the federation faces scrutiny for its financial priorities; its Vision 2047 roadmap allocates only 16% of expenditure to women's football, compared to 48% for the men's game. Despite these hurdles, the AIFF continues to manage 36 state associations and numerous national leagues, recently receiving the AFC President's Recognition Award for Grassroots Football in 2024.
