In short: When a radio reporter becomes the target of a hostage-taker, the line between news and survival vanishes. Discover the journey of American Hostage, an anthology series that brings a chilling real-life crisis to the small screen.

For MGM+, Shawn Ryan and Eileen Myers developed the crime thriller anthology, American Hostage. The series is an adaptation of the podcast of the same name, centering on a life-or-death crisis in Indianapolis. The narrative follows Fred Heckman, a popular radio news reporter, who finds himself caught in the middle of a standoff when hostage-taker Tony Kiritsis demands an interview on Heckman's program.

The production of the series spanned several years of development. Sony Pictures Television joined as producer in November 2023, alongside an extensive executive production group featuring Gabriel Mason, Shawn Christensen, Marney Hochman, Connie Tavel, and Jon Hamm. Following a greenlight from MGM+ on April 23, 2025, the series moved into production. While the story is set in Indianapolis, the first season was scheduled to be filmed in Winnipeg, Canada.

The cast features several notable actors, with Jon Hamm set to portray Fred Heckman. The ensemble grew throughout 2025, adding Mireille Enos in August, followed by William Jackson Harper, Giovanni Ribisi, and Kristoffer Polaha in September. Recurring roles were filled by Jonathan Tucker and Kat Cunning by October 2025. Direction for the initial episodes was handled by Adam Arkin and Nina Lopez Corrado.

Upon its premiere on September 20, 2026, the series entered a landscape of critical scrutiny. It received a preview screening at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival. Reviews have been mostly positive; the show earned an 88% approval rating from 16 Rotten Tomatoes critics, whereas Metacritic gave it 61/100 from eight assessments.
