How a killer's chilling threat became the title of a gripping docuseries
In short: In 2020, HBO released a documentary exploring the obsession of late author Michelle McNamara. The series follows her intense investigation into the Golden State Killer, a pursuit that merged deep trauma with a relentless drive to uncover the truth behind a predator's terrifying words.
On June 28, 2020, the HBO docuseries directed by Josh Koury, Myles Kane, Elizabeth Wolff, and Liz Garbus debuted. It centers on the investigative work of Michelle McNamara, who spent her nights scouring online chat rooms and crime blogs to write a book about the Golden State Killer. Her efforts were driven by a passion that transformed her quiet life into a high-stakes hunt for a serial predator. The original six-part production premiered on HBO in late June 2020. Liz Garbus, Elizabeth Wolff, Myles Kane, and Josh Koury served as directors.
The series' title is derived from a specific threat issued by the Golden State Killer during a 1976 attack. While targeting 15-year-old Kris Pedretti, the killer warned that failure to comply would result in death and his disappearance into the darkness. This haunting phrase serves as the thematic anchor for the production, which was executive produced by McNamara's husband, Patton Oswalt. This specific threat was made against his tenth victim. The killer told the teenager to obey him or face his disappearance.
The production, which began on April 24, 2018, also involved co-executive producers Paul Haynes and Billy Jensen, both of whom assisted Oswalt in completing McNamara's unfinished book. The series features narration by Amy Ryan and interviews with survivors, detectives, and family members. While the series received universal acclaim—earning an 80 Metacritic score and a 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes—it also highlights the personal cost of such obsession, including McNamara's struggle with an opioid addiction that preceded her death. The docuseries was acquired by HBO Documentary Films in April 2018. It features interviews with various detectives and family members.
