In short: The Amrit Bharat Express is transforming Indian rail travel by offering a low-cost, non-air-conditioned service for long-distance journeys. Utilizing innovative push-pull technology to enhance speed and comfort, this fleet is rapidly expanding to connect cities separated by vast distances, marking a significant shift in the nation's massive railway infrastructure strategy.

Launched commercially on 1 January 2024, the Amrit Bharat Express represents a strategic effort by Indian Railways to modernize long-distance travel for budget-conscious passengers. Designed for routes exceeding 800 kilometers or journeys lasting over ten hours, these trains provide essential sleeper and unreserved facilities. Each trainset is manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, with a production cost of approximately ₹65 crore, or US$6.7 million, per unit. The scale of this project is ambitious, with 200 additional trains currently in the pipeline, including 50 already under construction and 150 more in the planning stages.

The technical core of the Amrit Bharat Express is its push-pull configuration, which employs two locomotives at either end of the train. This setup, often featuring WAP-7 or WAP-5 locomotives, allows the train to reach operating speeds between 110 and 130 kilometers per hour. To ensure a smoother passenger experience, the coaches are equipped with semi-permanent couplers designed specifically to mitigate the jarring motions typically associated with rail travel. While the standard configuration relies on this dual-locomotive system, operational flexibility is evolving; by 2026, instances of single-locomotive operation have been documented, demonstrating the system's adaptability to varying transit requirements.

The network is growing rapidly, with 43 trains identified by April 2026 and 36 already in active service. Continuous improvement remains a priority for the Ministry of Railways, which introduced twelve major upgrades in January 2025, including a sophisticated emergency braking system. Furthermore, in August 2026, the approval for seven additional routes signaled sustained investment in the service. By balancing cost-efficiency with modern engineering, the Amrit Bharat Express aims to bridge the gap between high-speed luxury and traditional rail, providing a reliable, high-capacity transit solution that serves the needs of millions of travelers across the Indian subcontinent.
